11 Home office ideas for small spaces

We all love those slow, remote work days where we can skip traffic and walk straight over to our home offices. Working from home can be the perfect mix between comfort and productivity — but it can also be tricky with limited space. Luckily, you don’t need a large study at home to get the job done; create the perfect small home office with our 11 easy ideas.

1. Carve Out a Niche

Most remote workers set up desks in their living rooms or bedrooms but this tends to look messy and overwhelm the space. That’s why it’s best to create separation between your home office and living space, even when they’re in the same room.

Use a plain partition or even a bookcase to create a visual divide. If space is seriously limited, use paint to mark your home office space where the desk meets the wall.

2. Use a Corner Desk

A large, wooden desk isn’t an absolute must. Sometimes, all you need is enough space to fit a laptop. If you have a small corner open, simply wedge in a triangular desk. You can even DIY some triangular shelves for your notebooks and stationery.

3. Try a Closet Office

No spare corners for a workspace? Try converting a closet into a small, functional home office. There’s plenty of great “cloffice” inspo out there, whether you’ve got a walk-in with space for a chair or just an empty cupboard with a shelf that could double as a desk.

The great thing about cloffices? When you clock off for the day, you can simply close the door and conceal your workspace.

4. Use the Space Under the Stairs

 Office under stairs

Sure, this space might be minuscule, and you might even be using it for a broom closet, but can it fit your desktop setup? If the answer is yes, then it has potential! With a little creativity (and some scrolling through Pinterest) this can be a smart and stylish solution to your home office struggles.

5. Install a Pull-Out Table

Sometimes, a permanent desk takes up way too much space. If you have a talent for woodwork, this hack is for you. Replace an existing drawer with a pull-out table that you can use as a desk during your remote working hours. A foldable chair pairs perfectly with this solution, so both can disappear when you’re off the clock.

6. Don’t Forget the Landing

In two-storey homes, the upstairs landing is often bare and underutilised. While the negative space looks great, you can also do a lot with it. Afraid you’ll add too much visual clutter? A small writer’s desk can look like a carefully curated décor choice while also being one hundred percent practical.

7. Fold Your Desk Out Daily

Ever heard of a Murphy desk? Also known as a fold-out or wall-mounted desk, its space-saving design allows you to fold it away when not in use, making it indistinguishable from an ordinary cabinet. It’s neat, easy to install, and perfect for small spaces.

8. Get a Double-Sided Desk

Are you and your partner both working from home? A double-sided desk takes up less space than two separate ones. If you get one with a partition in the middle, it’ll give you the privacy you need not to get distracted. Noise cancelling headphones come in handy too — just remember to plan around each other’s Teams calls. This is also a good idea for kids who need space to do their homework if they’re sharing a room.

9. Use the Alcove

Who said alcoves were just for decoration? Slide a chair and a slab of wood into this cosy, arched space, and it’s as good as an office. Plus, it’s extra easy on the eyes — especially with some wallpaper and artwork. If your best work gets done in pretty spaces like quiet cafés and bookstores, this hack is for you.

10. Consider the Shed

There are plenty of reasons why you might not want to use your garden shed as a home office, but we’ve got solutions for some common issues. Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the yard? Get a booster to strengthen the signal. Need the space for your tools? Clear out the garage or rent extra storage space. Too hot or cold at certain points of the year? A free-standing AC unit will do the trick in summer while a heater works well in winter. No power outlets? An extension cord will sort you right out! This is the perfect, isolated space to work, free from household distractions.

11. Get a C-Table

Struggling to fit in a home office? A C-table works for anyone. You can slide it next to your couch, armchair, and even your bed for a comfy set-up, fitting the base underneath your furniture so it takes up zero floor space.

Pick-up Point Storo Brecht
